Can and Guy be just friends with a girl and viceversa?

It's often said by some people, normally older generation that guys/men and girls/woman can't be only friends, that there would be always be sexual tension existing between them. Although this idea doesn't take into account gays and lesbians being friends with same gender, so personally I think it's a load of bunk, but I've been surprised to see how many people believe this.

So what your thoughts and personal opinions on this?
