MIT and Harvard announce edX web education platform, make online learning cheap and easy

We'll forgive you if you failed to take MIT up on its offer take its courses for free when it rolled out its MITx online learning platform last year. However, Harvard took notice of its efforts, and has joined MIT online to form the edX platform and offer courses and content for free on the web. There's no word on the available subjects just yet, but video lessons, quizzes and online labs will all be a part of the curriculum, and those who comprehend the coursework can get a certificate of mastery upon completion. edX won't just benefit those who log on, either, as it'll be used to research how students learn and how technology can be used to improve teaching in both virtual and brick and mortar classrooms. The cost for this altruistic educational venture? 60 million dollars, with each party ponying up half. The first courses will be announced this summer, and classes are slated to start this fall. T-Mobile USA's chief marketing officer, Cole Brodman, calls it quits

Maybe he's finished running with the underdog, or maybe he's just done with the corporate gig altogether, but one thing is certain: as of May 25th, Cole Brodman will mark his exit from T-Mobile. For the past two years, Mr. Brodman has served as the carrier's chief marketing officer, and his departure concludes 17 years with the company. During his tenure, Cole Brodman railed against the subsidized handset game, helped drive the adoption of smartphones and -- sadly -- crushed our dreams for the potential of a Magenta-branded iPhone. He must also claim at least partial responsibility for the carrier's net loss of customers in 2011, with a total of 802,000 subscribers jumping ship in Q4 alone.

One thing is certain of Mr. Brodman's exit, however: he seems content with the decision. Likening the move to a retirement, he remarked, "It's an opportunity to step away, get a break and start to think about how I want to do something next." Andrew Sherrard will replace Cole Brodman as T-Mobile's interim chief marketing officer while the company searches for a permanent replacement. So long, Mr. Brodman, and thanks for the smartphones.

Second CM9 build for Galaxy Note looks a bit more functional

Yesterday we reported on the first CyanogenMod 9 build for the (international) Samsung Galaxy Note, noting that it was still early days, and that a couple of major bugs would make it a non-starter for many users. In particular, the lack of working phone calls was a deal-breaker for us. However, the devs at TeamHacksung have followed up with a second build today, fixing most of the serious glitches, including voice calls and video recording.

There are still some issues to be ironed out, including DSP Manager and Movie Studio, but kudos to the developers for moving so quickly to squish bugs. If you're rocking an international (GT-N7000) Galaxy Note and are comfortable with experimental custom ROMs, then hit the links below to get started.

Tom Jones: I was too famous to play James Bond

Singer and 1970s-era sex symbol Tom Jones said in an interview with the UK's?Radio Times that was once up for the role of James Bond, but got passed over because he was ?too well known.? The 71-year-old Welsh singer, who had U.S. hits with ?What's New Pussycat,? ?She?s a Lady? and ?Kiss,??said that despite his successful run as a pop singer, he?d have liked to have had a shot at acting.

?The only thing I regret is that I'd like to have had a pop at acting when I was younger,? Jones told the Radio Times. ?My name was up for James Bond at one time, but [producer] Cubby Broccoli apparently said I was too well known for people to believe it.?

The role of the fabled Agent 007 was established by Academy Award winner Sean Connery in ?Dr. No? from 1962. Connery played the lead role in the half dozen James Bond films that followed (excepting ?On Her Majesty's Secret Service? from 1969), after which Roger Moore nabbed the part.

Ironically, it might have been Jones? presence on the small screen, more than the radio, that made him too popular in the eyes of ?Bond? series producer Albert ?Cubby? Broccoli. From 1969 to 1971, the singer hosted his own variety show, ?This is Tom Jones,? which got him nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

Jones was involved peripherally, at least, with one Bond film, singing the main title track for the 1965 film ?Thunderball.? He also realized his dream of acting in 1996, when he played himself in the Tim Burton science fiction spoof ?Mars Attacks!? These days, he can be seen on UK TV in a new drama ?King of the Teds.?

And if you?re wondering whether Jones? acting is as keyed-up as his singing on songs like ?It?s Not Unusual,? the answer is an unequivocal ?yes.?

?I have a tendency to overact,? he said to the Radio Times. ?It's a Welsh thing.?
