Google's getting serious about education. Its Play for Education portal, announced last month at I/O, is creeping ever closer to a full launch, with a call for application submissions starting today. Developers that want to be considered for Google's curated storefront can mark their applications for consideration now via the Play Developer Console. But unlike the wild, wild west of the Play store at-large, where anything goes, not every education-focused app will get the greenlight. In fact, Google's submission process requires all applications marked as suitable for K-12 to first pass through a network of non-affiliated educators for evaluation before then being measured against the Play for Education store's requirements for classroom use. If selected, developer's applications will be made available to the many pilot programs currently underway across the country, with an eventual full-scale rollout when Play for Education officially launches sometime this fall.

They look sleek, sexy and dapper in their 1960s finery, but the cast of "Mad Men" isn't always so polished. In fact, sometimes when the stars who bring Don Draper, Roger Sterling and the rest of the characters to life aren't playing the roles they're most famous for, they're barely recognizable.
Before you say "so long" to the Sterling Cooper & Partners gang for the season on Sunday night, take a look at our roundup of some of the (not-so-) familiar faces.
AMC / NBC
Jon Hamm as Don Draper on "Mad Men" and Abner on "30 Rock."
Don Draper's made some serious mistakes on "Mad Men" this season, but thankfully, the look on the right isn't one of them. No, that's just John Hamm spoofing old-timey, distasteful comedies in an "Alfie and Abner" skit from a live episode of "30 Rock."
AMC / Netflix
John Slattery as Roger Sterling on "Mad Men" and Dr. Norman on "Arrested Development."
If it looks like Roger Sterling has seen better days in the second shot, that's because the actor who plays him, John Slattery, took on the part of a washed up, dirty doctor in the recent return of "Arrested Development."
AMC / CBS
Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson on "Mad Men" and Cynthia Parks on "Picket Fences."
Peggy Olson's grown into quite the copywriter at Sterling Cooper & Partners, but way before that, actress Elisabeth Moss hit the small screen when she was still small. She made her first appearance in the quirky dramedy "Picket Fences" in 1992.
AMC / 20th Century Television
Vincent Kartheiser as Pete Campbell on "Mad Men" and Connor on "Angel."
Even Pete Campbell -- or rather Vincent Kartheiser -- had a fresh-faced look on TV back in the day. Long before joining "Mad Men," Kartheiser played Connor, the non-vamp son of the fang-bearing lead, on "Angel."
AMC / FOX
Christina Hendricks as Joan Harris on "Mad Men" and Saffron on "Firefly."
If you're a fan of Joan Harris' just-so hair, tailored dresses and crimson lipstick, then Christina Hendricks' turn on "Firefly" might not interest you. But if you want to see Hendricks' range (and don't mind seeing her in far fewer clothes), then be sure to catch both of her decade-old episodes.
AMC / Capri Films
Jessica Pare as Megan Draper on "Mad Men" and Jennifer on "Suck."
Yikes! Megan Draper goes from Don's secretary to wife on "Mad Men," but actress Jessica Pare went from alive to undead in the movie "Suck."
AMC / NBC
Alison Brie as Trudy Campbell on "Mad Men" and Annie Edison on "Community."
When actress Alison Brie isn't playing the part of Pete's long-suffering wife, Trudy Campbell, she's laughing it up as the brainy and beautiful Annie on the sitcom "Community."
AMC / Warner Bros. Pictures
Jared Harris as Lane Pryce on "Mad Men" and Moriarty in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows."
Rest in peace, Lane Pryce. Fans of the fallen character can see actor Jared Harris back in action in the 2011 film "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," playing the ultimate match for the sleuth -- the devious Professor Moriarty.
The season six finale of "Mad Men" airs Sunday at 10 p.m. on AMC.

Paula Deen Fired By The Food Network Over Racist Comments (VIDEOS)
Paula Deen, the queen of Southern cooking on the Food Network, was dropped by the network on Friday. Who is having a good week in the world of MMA, and who isn't? Check it out in Cagewriter's version of hot or not.
Hot -- "King Mo" Lawal: What's the best way to respond to a knockout loss? Returning with a knockout win. Lawal did that on Wednesday and took out Seth Petruzelli with one punch. Lawal moved on in the Bellator tournament, while Petruzelli decided to retire.
Not -- Bellator ratings: Lawal delivered the memorable knockout, but not that many people watched it live. The ratings from Wednesday's fights were nearly half that of the last Bellator fight, and they got worse for "Fight Master," Bellator's new reality show.
Hot -- "The Korean Zombie:" Chan Sung Jung mentioned last week that Anthony Pettis had cut in line for a shot at the UFC featherweight belt. Pettis suffered a training injury, so now Jung doesn't have to wait for a title shot any more. He's fighting Jose Aldo at UFC 163 in Pettis' place.
Not -- Anthony Pettis: When he suffered the knee injury, Pettis hoped that it wouldn't take too long to heal, and maybe he could slide into UFC 164 and the already-scheduled fight between T.J. Grant and lightweight champion Benson Henderson. Unfortunately, the knee injury will take longer to heal than he had hoped, and he won't be fighting on either pay-per-view card in August.
Not -- New York: The state with the largest city is also the last state to consider professional MMA fighting illegal. MMA's status in New York took a blow this week as the bill to make MMA legal and regulated never made it to a vote.
Still taking temperature -- Invicta FC: After previously showing their fights just through online streaming, the all-women's promotion is making the jump to television pay-per-views. Fans will have the chance to purchase the July 13 event, headlined by Marloes Coenen vs. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, via iNDemand, Dish and Avail-TVN for $14.95. Will it work?

NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) ? State police officers and dogs searched the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez again Saturday as they continue to investigate the killing of a semi-pro football player whose body was found about a mile away.
The search of Hernandez's sprawling home and vehicle in North Attleboro began in the afternoon and lasted for more than three hours. Locksmiths and several officers were involved, including one with a crowbar.
Detectives and uniformed officers who searched the home, its backyard and playhouse did not comment to reporters on what they were looking for or what caused them to return to the house located not far from where the Patriots practice and about a mile from where a jogger found the body of Odin Lloyd on Monday.
Lloyd family members said Friday that he had been dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee for about two years. They said the two men were friends who were together the night Lloyd died.
Authorities have ruled Lloyd's death a homicide.
A spokeswoman for the Bristol District Attorney's office declined to comment on the investigation Saturday. A state police spokesman referred questions to the district attorney's office.
An attorney for Hernandez has said he would not comment on the searches.
Three search warrants were issued in the investigation earlier last week but have not been returned, meaning they're not public. No arrest warrants were filed in state courts by the time court closed Friday, Attleboro District Court clerk magistrate Mark E. Sturdy said. Courts were closed Saturday.
Police previously searched in and around the home as they try to figure out who killed Lloyd.
Police in nearby Providence, R.I., said they had assisted Massachusetts state police and North Attleborough police with activity related to the Hernandez investigation at a strip club named Club Desire. It was unclear if they believed Lloyd and Hernandez might have been at the club in the days before Lloyd died.
Patriots spokesman Stacey James has said the team does not anticipate commenting publicly during the police investigation. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was waiting for the legal process to take its course.
The Patriots drafted Hernandez out of Florida in 2010. Since then, he has combined with Rob Gronkowski to form one of the top tight end duos in the NFL. He missed 10 games last season with an ankle injury and had shoulder surgery in April but is expected to be ready for training camp. Last summer, the Patriots gave him a five-year contract worth $40 million.

Every year on the fourth weekend in June, the largest amateur radio event in the US and Canada occurs. It?s called Field Day. The first Field Day was in 1933 and this year?s event??June 22-23?is the 80th?anniversary.
During the event, amateur radio operators spend the weekend making contacts with each other. Many clubs ?also show they can setup a communications site off the grid showing readiness for an emergency event. Field day sites can be quite impressive. Some boast 30-foot tall towers with huge antennas at the top and a large array of electronics equipment. Other are simply a solo operator using a home brew radio, a wire in the tree for an antenna, and a solar panel for power. Some sites just logging each contact on a pad of paper. Others setup their own network with VIOP phones between stations and all the computers logging contacts connected together.?Communication modes are true old school morse code or voice, as well as digital modes like RTTY and PSK31 that are computer to computer communications. People setup computer controlled antennas to track and communicate using satellites. Some will bounce signals off the moon to communicate.
Education is a big part of Field Day. Most club sites are open to the public and most also have a Get On The Air stations, GOTA, an opportunity for for people who are not licensed to dip their toe in the hobby. If you are interested in visiting a Field Day site, they can be located ?here.
Getting involved is much easier these days since there is no more morse code requirement to earn your license. Almost every Maker Faire has an Amateur Radio?presence. Check us out at the next maker faire near you.

Twins rubber bands: This video will go down in Internet history as the cutest video to go viral since the last cutest video. Sure, we may forget all about the twins and their rubber bands by tomorrow, but lets enjoy it today.?
By Andrew Averill,?Contributor / June 20, 2013
Nothing in the twins' lives has been, or ever will be, as exciting as rubber bands. This video of twins playing with rubber bands has been stretching across the Internet the past few days, so why haven't we at Modern Parenthood posted it yet? To be honest, we've been too busy geeking out to the twins and their rubber bands to actually do something productive.

With the video finally paused, no easy feat considering the psychological tug of a baby's laugh, not to mention the laughter of two babies, we're ready to do our job.?
This is clearly the most infectiously funny video since the 2008 four laughing babies video which has more than 3.6 million views.
So just what is this video? Simple explanation: twins plus rubber bands equals laughter. Explanation with a Les Miserables paraphrase: To watch these little laughing persons is to see the face of God.?

Treating pain is a tricky business?especially when it comes to the chronic, perpetually debilitating kind. For things like back injuries, osteoarthritis, and bone cancer, you're really only left with two options: deal with the often dangerous, unpredictable side-effects of prescription painkillers or suffer through it. But all that might change soon thanks to a Moroccan "cactuslike plant" and its toxins potential to kill localized pain?forever.

June 20, 2013 ? On June 7, 2011, our Sun erupted, blasting tons of hot plasma into space. Some of that plasma splashed back down onto the Sun's surface, sparking bright flashes of ultraviolet light. This dramatic event may provide new insights into how young stars grow by sucking up nearby gas.
The eruption and subsequent splashdown were observed in spectacular detail by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. This spacecraft watches the Sun 24 hours a day, providing images with better-than-HD resolution. Its Atmospheric Imaging Assembly instrument was designed and developed by researchers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).
"We're getting beautiful observations of the Sun. And we get such high spatial resolution and high cadence that we can see things that weren't obvious before," says CfA astronomer Paola Testa.
Movies of the June 7th eruption show dark filaments of gas blasting outward from the Sun's lower right. Although the solar plasma appears dark against the Sun's bright surface, it actually glows at a temperature of about 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit. When the blobs of plasma hit the Sun's surface again, they heat up by a factor of 100 to a temperature of almost 2 million degrees F. As a result, those spots brighten in the ultraviolet by a factor of 2 -- 5 over just a few minutes.
The tremendous energy release occurs because the in falling blobs are traveling at high speeds, up to 900,000 miles per hour (400 km/sec). Those speeds are similar to the speeds reached by material falling onto young stars as they grow via accretion. Therefore, observations of this solar eruption provide an "up close" view of what happens on distant stars.
"We often study young stars to learn about our Sun when it was an 'infant.' Now we're doing the reverse and studying our Sun to better understand distant stars," notes Testa.
These new observations, combined with computer modeling, have helped resolve a decade-long argument over how to measure the accretion rates of growing stars. Astronomers calculate how fast a young star is gathering material by observing its brightness at various wavelengths of light, and how that brightness changes over time. However, they got higher estimates from optical and ultraviolet light than from X-rays.
The team discovered that the ultraviolet flashes they observed came from the in falling material itself, not the surrounding solar atmosphere. If the same is true for distant, young stars, then by analyzing the ultraviolet light they emit, we can learn about the material they are accreting.
"By seeing the dark spots on the Sun, we can learn about how young stars accrete material and grow." explains Testa.

The team aboard the Shenzhou 10 space capsule, launched from the remote Gobi Desert two days ago, will spend 12 days at Tiangong 1, a laboratory whose name translates to Heavenly Palace. They will spend in total 15 days in space, the longest yet for China.
Schenzhou 10 is the fifth Chinese mission into space in 10 years. Those missions have continuously become more complex, beginning with an orbital mission that lasted under 24 hours in 2003. Most recently, a three-member team on Shenzhou 9 spent 13 days in space, also docking at Tiangong 1.
China is ultimately hoping to build an international space station similar to Russia's Mir space station, a seven-module station. Russia dumped that station in 2001, joining the International Space Station project instead.
The Shenzhou 10 astronauts will test new docking techniques aboard Tiangong 1 that will be critical to developing a Chinese space station. The team, which includes China?s second woman in space, will also present a video lecture for Chinese schoolchildren.
This is the last time Tiangong 1 will house astronauts. After more than 600 days in space, and playing host to three Chinese teams, the space lab will be out of the resources needed to support docking teams after the Shenzhou 10 team de-boards, bound for a landing in Mongolia. Tiangong 1 will be converted into a miles-high warehouse used while the proposed space station is undergoing construction.
In the next step toward that space station, China plans to later this year send into orbit a new module, Tiangong 2, which is designed to host a crew of three for up to 20 days. It also has a second docking port, to accept resupply missions. Another module, Tiangong 3, is expected to launch in 2015 and will be incorporated into the eventual space station.
