Cancer is a result of a default cellular 'safe mode,' physicist proposes

June 30, 2013 ? With death rates from cancer have remained largely unchanged over the past 60 years, a physicist is trying to shed more light on the disease with a very different theory of its origin that traces cancer back to the dawn of multicellularity more than a billion years ago.

In this month's special issue of Physics World devoted to the "physics of cancer," Paul Davies, principal investigator at Arizona State University's Center for Convergence of Physical Sciences and Cancer Biology, explains his radical new theory.

Davies was brought in to lead the centre in 2009 having almost no experience in cancer research whatsoever. With a background in theoretical physics and cosmology, he was employed to bring fresh, unbiased eyes to the underlying principles of the disease.

He has since raised questions that are rarely asked by oncologists: thinking about why cancer exists at all and what place it holds in the grand story of life on Earth.

His new theory, drawn together with Charles Lineweaver of the Australian National University, suggests that cancer is a throwback to an ancient genetic "sub-routine" where the mechanisms that usually instruct cells when to multiply and die malfunctions, thus forcing the cells to revert back to a default option that was programmed into their ancestors long ago.

"To use a computer analogy, cancer is like Windows defaulting to 'safe mode' after suffering an insult of some sort," Davies writes.

The result of this malfunction is the start of a cascade of events that we identify as cancer -- a runaway proliferation of cells that form a tumour, which eventually becomes mobile itself, spreading to other parts of the body and invading and colonizing.

Orthodox explanations suppose that cancer results from an accumulation of random genetic mutations, with the cancer starting from scratch each time it manifests; however, Davies and Lineweaver believe it is caused by a set of genes that have been passed on from our very early ancestors and are "switched on" in the very early stages of an organism's life as cells differentiate into specialist forms.

The pair suggests that the genes that are involved in the early development of the embryo -- and that are silenced, or switched off, thereafter -- become inappropriately reactivated in the adult as a result of some sort of trigger or damage, such as chemicals, radiation or inflammation.

"Very roughly, the earlier the embryonic stage, the more basic and ancient will be the genes guiding development, and the more carefully conserved and widely distributed they will be among species," Davies writes.

Several research teams around the world are currently providing experimental evidence that shows the similarities between the expression of genes in a tumour and an embryo, adding weight to Davies and Lineweaver's theory.

Davies makes it clear that radical new thinking is needed; however, just like ageing, he states that cancer cannot generally be cured but can be mitigated, which we can only do when we better understand the disease, and its place in the "great sweep of evolutionary history."

Device Shipments Up 6% To 2.4B In 2013, Driven By Android Tablets, Smartphones Amid More PC Decline

android_series01Gartner today has released its latest figures charting its overall predictions for how IT devices -- from PCs to mobile handsets -- are going to perform this year and in 2014. As in years before, numbers will continue to climb: in 2013, total shipments will rise 5.9% to 2.35 billion, and will rise again in 2014 to 2.5 billion units, driven by portable, often less expensive, but just as powerful mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Android will account for just over one-third of all devices this year, and nearly half in 2014.?It's an Android world after all.

Google Play for Education now accepting developer submissions

Google Play for Education now accepting developer submissions

Google's getting serious about education. Its Play for Education portal, announced last month at I/O, is creeping ever closer to a full launch, with a call for application submissions starting today. Developers that want to be considered for Google's curated storefront can mark their applications for consideration now via the Play Developer Console. But unlike the wild, wild west of the Play store at-large, where anything goes, not every education-focused app will get the greenlight. In fact, Google's submission process requires all applications marked as suitable for K-12 to first pass through a network of non-affiliated educators for evaluation before then being measured against the Play for Education store's requirements for classroom use. If selected, developer's applications will be made available to the many pilot programs currently underway across the country, with an eventual full-scale rollout when Play for Education officially launches sometime this fall.

'Mad Men' stars in not-so-'60s roles

TV

They look sleek, sexy and dapper in their 1960s finery, but the cast of "Mad Men" isn't always so polished. In fact, sometimes when the stars who bring Don Draper, Roger Sterling and the rest of the characters to life aren't playing the roles they're most famous for, they're barely recognizable.

Before you say "so long" to the Sterling Cooper & Partners gang for the season on Sunday night, take a look at our roundup of some of the (not-so-) familiar faces.

Image: Jon Hamm as Don Draper on "Mad Men" and Abner on "30 Rock."

AMC / NBC

Jon Hamm as Don Draper on "Mad Men" and Abner on "30 Rock."

Don Draper's made some serious mistakes on "Mad Men" this season, but thankfully, the look on the right isn't one of them. No, that's just John Hamm spoofing old-timey, distasteful comedies in an "Alfie and Abner" skit from a live episode of "30 Rock."

Image: John Slattery as Roger Sterling on "Mad Men" and Dr. Norman on "Arrested Development."

AMC / Netflix

John Slattery as Roger Sterling on "Mad Men" and Dr. Norman on "Arrested Development."

If it looks like Roger Sterling has seen better days in the second shot, that's because the actor who plays him, John Slattery, took on the part of a washed up, dirty doctor in the recent return of "Arrested Development."

Image: Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson on "Mad Men" and Cynthia Parks on "Picket Fences."

AMC / CBS

Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson on "Mad Men" and Cynthia Parks on "Picket Fences."

Peggy Olson's grown into quite the copywriter at Sterling Cooper & Partners, but way before that, actress Elisabeth Moss hit the small screen when she was still small. She made her first appearance in the quirky dramedy "Picket Fences" in 1992.

Image: Vincent Kartheiser as Pete Campbell on "Mad Men" and Connor on "Angel."

AMC / 20th Century Television

Vincent Kartheiser as Pete Campbell on "Mad Men" and Connor on "Angel."

Even Pete Campbell -- or rather Vincent Kartheiser -- had a fresh-faced look on TV back in the day. Long before joining "Mad Men," Kartheiser played Connor, the non-vamp son of the fang-bearing lead, on "Angel."

Image: Christina Hendricks as Joan Harris on "Mad Men" and Saffron on "Firefly."

AMC / FOX

Christina Hendricks as Joan Harris on "Mad Men" and Saffron on "Firefly."

If you're a fan of Joan Harris' just-so hair, tailored dresses and crimson lipstick, then Christina Hendricks' turn on "Firefly" might not interest you. But if you want to see Hendricks' range (and don't mind seeing her in far fewer clothes), then be sure to catch both of her decade-old episodes.

Image: Jessica Pare as Megan Draper on "Mad Men" and Jennifer on "Suck."

AMC / Capri Films

Jessica Pare as Megan Draper on "Mad Men" and Jennifer on "Suck."

Yikes! Megan Draper goes from Don's secretary to wife on "Mad Men," but actress Jessica Pare went from alive to undead in the movie "Suck."

Image: Alison Brie as Trudy Campbell on "Mad Men" and Annie Edison on "Community."

AMC / NBC

Alison Brie as Trudy Campbell on "Mad Men" and Annie Edison on "Community."

When actress Alison Brie isn't playing the part of Pete's long-suffering wife, Trudy Campbell, she's laughing it up as the brainy and beautiful Annie on the sitcom "Community."

AMC / Warner Bros. Pictures

Jared Harris as Lane Pryce on "Mad Men" and Moriarty in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows."

Rest in peace, Lane Pryce. Fans of the fallen character can see actor Jared Harris back in action in the 2011 film "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," playing the ultimate match for the sleuth -- the devious Professor Moriarty.

The season six finale of "Mad Men" airs Sunday at 10 p.m. on AMC.

Where did ?King Mo,? New York and ?The Korean Zombie? fall on Cagewriter?s Hot or Not list?

Who is having a good week in the world of MMA, and who isn't? Check it out in Cagewriter's version of hot or not.

Hot -- "King Mo" Lawal: What's the best way to respond to a knockout loss? Returning with a knockout win. Lawal did that on Wednesday and took out Seth Petruzelli with one punch. Lawal moved on in the Bellator tournament, while Petruzelli decided to retire.

Not -- Bellator ratings: Lawal delivered the memorable knockout, but not that many people watched it live. The ratings from Wednesday's fights were nearly half that of the last Bellator fight, and they got worse for "Fight Master," Bellator's new reality show.

Hot -- "The Korean Zombie:" Chan Sung Jung mentioned last week that Anthony Pettis had cut in line for a shot at the UFC featherweight belt. Pettis suffered a training injury, so now Jung doesn't have to wait for a title shot any more. He's fighting Jose Aldo at UFC 163 in Pettis' place.

Not -- Anthony Pettis: When he suffered the knee injury, Pettis hoped that it wouldn't take too long to heal, and maybe he could slide into UFC 164 and the already-scheduled fight between T.J. Grant and lightweight champion Benson Henderson. Unfortunately, the knee injury will take longer to heal than he had hoped, and he won't be fighting on either pay-per-view card in August.

Not -- New York: The state with the largest city is also the last state to consider professional MMA fighting illegal. MMA's status in New York took a blow this week as the bill to make MMA legal and regulated never made it to a vote.

Still taking temperature -- Invicta FC: After previously showing their fights just through online streaming, the all-women's promotion is making the jump to television pay-per-views. Fans will have the chance to purchase the July 13 event, headlined by Marloes Coenen vs. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, via iNDemand, Dish and Avail-TVN for $14.95. Will it work?

As always, thank you for reading Cagewriter. We appreciate each and every one of you. For more Cagewriting fun, check us out on Facebook and Twitter.

Police again search home of Patriots' Hernandez

NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) ? State police officers and dogs searched the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez again Saturday as they continue to investigate the killing of a semi-pro football player whose body was found about a mile away.

The search of Hernandez's sprawling home and vehicle in North Attleboro began in the afternoon and lasted for more than three hours. Locksmiths and several officers were involved, including one with a crowbar.

Detectives and uniformed officers who searched the home, its backyard and playhouse did not comment to reporters on what they were looking for or what caused them to return to the house located not far from where the Patriots practice and about a mile from where a jogger found the body of Odin Lloyd on Monday.

Lloyd family members said Friday that he had been dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee for about two years. They said the two men were friends who were together the night Lloyd died.

Authorities have ruled Lloyd's death a homicide.

A spokeswoman for the Bristol District Attorney's office declined to comment on the investigation Saturday. A state police spokesman referred questions to the district attorney's office.

An attorney for Hernandez has said he would not comment on the searches.

Three search warrants were issued in the investigation earlier last week but have not been returned, meaning they're not public. No arrest warrants were filed in state courts by the time court closed Friday, Attleboro District Court clerk magistrate Mark E. Sturdy said. Courts were closed Saturday.

Police previously searched in and around the home as they try to figure out who killed Lloyd.

Police in nearby Providence, R.I., said they had assisted Massachusetts state police and North Attleborough police with activity related to the Hernandez investigation at a strip club named Club Desire. It was unclear if they believed Lloyd and Hernandez might have been at the club in the days before Lloyd died.

Patriots spokesman Stacey James has said the team does not anticipate commenting publicly during the police investigation. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was waiting for the legal process to take its course.

The Patriots drafted Hernandez out of Florida in 2010. Since then, he has combined with Rob Gronkowski to form one of the top tight end duos in the NFL. He missed 10 games last season with an ankle injury and had shoulder surgery in April but is expected to be ready for training camp. Last summer, the Patriots gave him a five-year contract worth $40 million.

MAKE | HAM Radio 80th Anniversary ?Field Day? This Weekend

Every year on the fourth weekend in June, the largest amateur radio event in the US and Canada occurs. It?s called Field Day. The first Field Day was in 1933 and this year?s event??June 22-23?is the 80th?anniversary.

During the event, amateur radio operators spend the weekend making contacts with each other. Many clubs ?also show they can setup a communications site off the grid showing readiness for an emergency event. Field day sites can be quite impressive. Some boast 30-foot tall towers with huge antennas at the top and a large array of electronics equipment. Other are simply a solo operator using a home brew radio, a wire in the tree for an antenna, and a solar panel for power. Some sites just logging each contact on a pad of paper. Others setup their own network with VIOP phones between stations and all the computers logging contacts connected together.?Communication modes are true old school morse code or voice, as well as digital modes like RTTY and PSK31 that are computer to computer communications. People setup computer controlled antennas to track and communicate using satellites. Some will bounce signals off the moon to communicate.

Education is a big part of Field Day. Most club sites are open to the public and most also have a Get On The Air stations, GOTA, an opportunity for for people who are not licensed to dip their toe in the hobby. If you are interested in visiting a Field Day site, they can be located ?here.

Getting involved is much easier these days since there is no more morse code requirement to earn your license. Almost every Maker Faire has an Amateur Radio?presence. Check us out at the next maker faire near you.

Twins rubber bands video: Two babies have the best time ever

Twins rubber bands: This video will go down in Internet history as the cutest video to go viral since the last cutest video. Sure, we may forget all about the twins and their rubber bands by tomorrow, but lets enjoy it today.?

By Andrew Averill,?Contributor / June 20, 2013

Nothing in the twins' lives has been, or ever will be, as exciting as rubber bands.

This video of twins playing with rubber bands has been stretching across the Internet the past few days, so why haven't we at Modern Parenthood posted it yet? To be honest, we've been too busy geeking out to the twins and their rubber bands to actually do something productive.

With the video finally paused, no easy feat considering the psychological tug of a baby's laugh, not to mention the laughter of two babies, we're ready to do our job.?

This is clearly the most infectiously funny video since the 2008 four laughing babies video which has more than 3.6 million views.

So just what is this video? Simple explanation: twins plus rubber bands equals laughter. Explanation with a Les Miserables paraphrase: To watch these little laughing persons is to see the face of God.?

A New Drug Could End Chronic Pain Forever

A New Drug Could End Chronic Pain Forever

Treating pain is a tricky business?especially when it comes to the chronic, perpetually debilitating kind. For things like back injuries, osteoarthritis, and bone cancer, you're really only left with two options: deal with the often dangerous, unpredictable side-effects of prescription painkillers or suffer through it. But all that might change soon thanks to a Moroccan "cactuslike plant" and its toxins potential to kill localized pain?forever.

Solar splashdown provide new insights into how young stars grow by sucking up nearby gas

June 20, 2013 ? On June 7, 2011, our Sun erupted, blasting tons of hot plasma into space. Some of that plasma splashed back down onto the Sun's surface, sparking bright flashes of ultraviolet light. This dramatic event may provide new insights into how young stars grow by sucking up nearby gas.

The eruption and subsequent splashdown were observed in spectacular detail by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. This spacecraft watches the Sun 24 hours a day, providing images with better-than-HD resolution. Its Atmospheric Imaging Assembly instrument was designed and developed by researchers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).

"We're getting beautiful observations of the Sun. And we get such high spatial resolution and high cadence that we can see things that weren't obvious before," says CfA astronomer Paola Testa.

Movies of the June 7th eruption show dark filaments of gas blasting outward from the Sun's lower right. Although the solar plasma appears dark against the Sun's bright surface, it actually glows at a temperature of about 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit. When the blobs of plasma hit the Sun's surface again, they heat up by a factor of 100 to a temperature of almost 2 million degrees F. As a result, those spots brighten in the ultraviolet by a factor of 2 -- 5 over just a few minutes.

The tremendous energy release occurs because the in falling blobs are traveling at high speeds, up to 900,000 miles per hour (400 km/sec). Those speeds are similar to the speeds reached by material falling onto young stars as they grow via accretion. Therefore, observations of this solar eruption provide an "up close" view of what happens on distant stars.

"We often study young stars to learn about our Sun when it was an 'infant.' Now we're doing the reverse and studying our Sun to better understand distant stars," notes Testa.

These new observations, combined with computer modeling, have helped resolve a decade-long argument over how to measure the accretion rates of growing stars. Astronomers calculate how fast a young star is gathering material by observing its brightness at various wavelengths of light, and how that brightness changes over time. However, they got higher estimates from optical and ultraviolet light than from X-rays.

The team discovered that the ultraviolet flashes they observed came from the in falling material itself, not the surrounding solar atmosphere. If the same is true for distant, young stars, then by analyzing the ultraviolet light they emit, we can learn about the material they are accreting.

"By seeing the dark spots on the Sun, we can learn about how young stars accrete material and grow." explains Testa.

Why three Chinese are spending 12 days in space lab

Three Chinese astronauts docked at Tiangong 1, an experimental space module Thursday, the next step in China's pursuit of a space station. The team includes China?s second woman in space.

Three Chinese astronauts docked at an experimental space module Thursday morning, beginning what is to be China?s longest stay in space so far and the latest step in China?s plan to put a space station into orbit.

The team aboard the Shenzhou 10 space capsule, launched from the remote Gobi Desert two days ago, will spend 12 days at Tiangong 1, a laboratory whose name translates to Heavenly Palace. They will spend in total 15 days in space, the longest yet for China.

Schenzhou 10 is the fifth Chinese mission into space in 10 years. Those missions have continuously become more complex, beginning with an orbital mission that lasted under 24 hours in 2003. Most recently, a three-member team on Shenzhou 9 spent 13 days in space, also docking at Tiangong 1.

China is ultimately hoping to build an international space station similar to Russia's Mir space station, a seven-module station. Russia dumped that station in 2001, joining the International Space Station project instead.

The Shenzhou 10 astronauts will test new docking techniques aboard Tiangong 1 that will be critical to developing a Chinese space station. The team, which includes China?s second woman in space, will also present a video lecture for Chinese schoolchildren.

This is the last time Tiangong 1 will house astronauts. After more than 600 days in space, and playing host to three Chinese teams, the space lab will be out of the resources needed to support docking teams after the Shenzhou 10 team de-boards, bound for a landing in Mongolia. Tiangong 1 will be converted into a miles-high warehouse used while the proposed space station is undergoing construction.

In the next step toward that space station, China plans to later this year send into orbit a new module, Tiangong 2, which is designed to host a crew of three for up to 20 days. It also has a second docking port, to accept resupply missions. Another module, Tiangong 3, is expected to launch in 2015 and will be incorporated into the eventual space station.

Jet Star roller coaster meets wrecking crew

Workers watch as the Jet Star roller coaster is torn down. (Mark Wilson/Getty Images)

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J.?They lined up by the dozens on Tuesday, cameras and iPhones in tow, taking their place along the balcony of a pizzeria recently reopened just off the beach. Nearby, construction workers hammered lumber into place to rebuild the boardwalk destroyed in October by Superstorm Sandy.

But just after noon, all work stopped and silence fell. A giant crane then tore into what has been the star attraction of this Jersey shore community in the six months since it was nearly destroyed by Sandy.

The Jet Star?the roller coaster submerged in the Atlantic Ocean since Oct. 29, when the massive storm surge sucked much of the pier and boardwalk here into the sea?was finally coming down. For many, it has been an icon of the devastation left in Sandy?s wake, a hauntingly beautiful reminder of everything the storm took from this working-class oceanfront community.

As a crane with a giant steel scoop struggled to rip apart the roller coaster's steel frame and tracks, the crowd took pictures.

?Here it goes,? one man said as the crane tore into the upper part of the coaster. ?Mark this time: 12:12 p.m. That?s when it was over.?

Some in the crowd talked about where they were when Sandy struck, and how some got off easy while others lost everything. Some merely offered color commentary, as if they had to verbalize the scene to make it true. ?It?s like dipping a fork into spaghetti,? one man said as the crane struggled to free a jagged piece of steel from the lower section of the coaster.

Camera crews, who had been told work would begin later in the afternoon, rushed to get the shot as, above them, a handful of news helicopters suddenly swooped in. A spokeswoman for Casino Pier, the coaster?s owner, later apologized for the early start, blaming an ?overzealous? crew that wanted to get to work as soon as possible.

?It?s an emotional moment,? Bill Akers, the mayor of Seaside Heights, told Yahoo News, as he stood on a newly built section of the boardwalk just a few yards down the beach. The boards we were standing on, Akers said, hadn?t been there the day before?a sign of how furiously the town is working to get its amusement area reopened before Memorial Day weekend, the official launch of the summer tourist season that is crucial to the city?s economy.

?It took us a little longer than we would have liked ? but we are very grateful to be at this point. Very very happy,? Akers said. ?We always believed it could happen. But a lot of things had to go well for us, including Mother Nature had to give us the opportunity to get to this point. ... I?m glad we are where we are.?

There are still many unknowns, however, about what Seaside Heights will look like in two weeks?and whether tourists will truly come back in the volume this city needs to survive.

On Tuesday, Casino Pier said it hopes to open 18 rides this summer?about half as normal. The park is hoping that most of them will be open by Memorial Day?but the lower part of the pier, still under construction, needs to be rewired with electricity.

By July 4, the park hopes to open what will be the temporary replacement for the Jet Star?a new thrill ride the park is calling ?The Superstorm,? which will swing occupants on a giant pendulum. The ride, officials said, was named in honor of Sandy as a sign of the resilience of Seaside Heights. They rejected the idea that it might be considered in poor taste given how many people in the region were negatively affected by Sandy.

?This is a memorial to the strength and resiliency of this city,? Toby Wolf, a spokeswoman for Casino Pier, said.

But that won?t be the only memorial. Next summer, Casino Pier plans to install a piece of the Jet Star on what it says will be a pier fully rebuilt and back to normal by 2014.

It?s unclear where the rest of the coaster will go. Many who congregated here to see it come down suggested they wouldn?t mind owning a piece?but Casino Pier officials said it would not put any part of the ride up for sale.

The Jet Star dismantling?a process expected to take fewer than 48 hours?continued on into the afternoon. Officials said the crews planned to work at all hours until the job was finished.

Carmen Holster, who had driven from his home in Pompton Plains, in north New Jersey, to see the coaster demolished, said it was a trip he'd made every other week over the past six months. He visited, he said, to see the ride and to mark the progress of Seaside Heights, where he spends part of the summer every year.

He was sad to see the coaster being demolished. ?I?ve been on it. All my kids have been on it. We were hoping the grandkids would get to go on it, but they won?t,? Holster said with a shrug of his shoulders.

He said he wasn?t among those who had hoped the Jet Star would stay in the water longer as a reminder of Sandy?s wrath?suggesting it would have been hazardous. But he marveled at how long the coaster survived submerged in the sea.

?It?s amazing how it stayed together,? Holster said. ?Whoever did the construction job of bolting it did one heck of a job.?

As he spoke, the crane emitted puffs of black smoke as it tried to dismember another part of the Jet Star, which stubbornly refused to break.

AT&T LG Optimus G Pro now up for pre-order

Optimus G Pro

5.5-incher costs $199.99 on contract, ships May 7

Right on schedule, AT&T has begun taking pre-orders for the LG Optimus G Pro. The 5.5-inch device, which rocks a Snapdragon 600 CPU and a 1080p screen, is yours for $199.99 on a standard two-year contract or $549.99 on its own. AT&T's site reveals a May 7 shipping date, so pre-order customers may well get their phones a little ahead of the previously-announced May 10 launch date.

In our March review of the Korean Optimus G Pro, as well as our more recent hands-on with AT&T's version, we've found the device to be a worthy competitor to Samsung's Note series, which has so far dominated the large form factor space.

If you're wanting to place a pre-order today, you can do so over at the source link.

Commuting Is No Sweat on These Swanky E-Bikes

With gas prices hovering around $4 a gallon and what seems an entire generation shunning automobiles, it's no wonder that bike commuting has seen such a resurgence in recent years. But for all the physical and environmental benefits riding imparts, it nevertheless leaves you a hot, sweaty mess. That is, of course, unless you get your bike to do the pedaling for you.

A2B bikes is the American arm of the HERO Eco Group, which has been making electric bikes for Indian and European markets since the turn of the century. The A2B lineup boasts five models with a variety of pedal assist and throttle options to minimize commuting effort. I recently took a ride on four of the models at A2B's showroom in downtown San Francisco.

Shima

The Shima's 500W wheel-hub propulsion system provides a roughly 37 mile range per 5 hour charge of its 36v 13.2ah Lithium-ion battery. That battery slides in and out under the rear deck and can be locked in place when you park. Three levels of pedal assist?economy, standard, and speed racer?provide up to 35 Nm of torque and propels the rider to speeds approaching 30 MPH. It's 7-speed Shimano gear set is relatively short and with the pedal assist at max, I routinely beat traffic off the line and passed other riders with ease. It felt like I was perpetually riding downhill. The Shima retails for $3,800.

All of the models include integrated head and tail lights and are all currently available.

Alva

The Alva is another pedal assist model, designed for comfort where the Shima was built for speed. Its 36v, 13.2ah Lithium-ion battery drives a 450W brushless hub motor to reach speeds of 20 MPH and a range of 20 miles. While the Shima's pedal assist was powerful enough to get off the line without too much trouble, the Alva takes a more on-demand approach. Located just under the bell on the left handlebar, there's a rocker switch that manually engages the motor without requiring you to push off or pedal start. That way you get a little bit of speed going before you start pedaling and eliminates the need to huff and puff through the first two gears. The Alva will set you back a $4,000.

Alva +

The Alva+ takes the features that made the Alva so popular in Europe and recalibrates them for lazy Americans. It offers pedal assist like its predecessor but upgrades the start button into a full-on throttle integrated into the right handlebar so you'll never have to pedal through the low gears. The Alva+ tops out at about 20 MPH under just throttle power but when you start pedalling as well, you can reach about 24 MPH, easily keep pace with city traffic over the bike's 37 mile range. The key fob security system?needed to turn on or adjust the power assist level?is ingenious as the A+ weighs a 66 pounds and challenging to ride without it. They may take your bike, but they won't get more than a few blocks with it. The Alva+ costs $4,000 as well.

Octave

Kyle Langdon, A2B's Business Operations Manager, described the Octave as the Escalade of E-Bikes. The man does not lie, the Octave is downright luxurious?like a Beach Cruiser you don't have to pedal. See, the cranks are set forward on the frame far ahead of the seat, like a Cruiser. This eases the rider into a more upright and comfortable sitting position, almost like a recumbent. Sure, that position makes pushing hard with your legs nearly impossible but it does not matter because you won't actually be doing much pedaling. I rode this bike for a good 20 minutes and pedaled none times?Zero?I just kept grabbing handfuls of throttle instead. The primary battery is located internally and delivers 15-20 MPH and 20 miles of range, though it can be augmented with a secondary battery on the rear deck, which boosts range to a possible 40 miles. It, too, runs $4,000 .

MasterFX Photo App Claims To Make You A Michelangelo Not An Instagram Sheep

michelangelo-buonarottiPhoto and video apps have rocketed up the app store charts driven by apps like Instagram and Vine, becoming the third largest category in iOS downloads. Most contain casual photo filters and simple editing tools. In contrast with this trend, others are feeding the desire for photo editing with more sophisticated apps. The latest entrant to this market is MasterFX which launches today for iPad and iPhone, offering the kinds of tools professional designers might recognise, without the user needing to learn complicated techniques. It also incorporates a gallery of a few million royalty free photos. Handy.
